Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML

Take A Fun Trip To Webville

Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML by Elizabeth Freeman and Eric Freeman is an excellent book for bright 11 year olds and up because of its:

  1. Humor;
  2. Contemporary files;
  3. Fun exercises;
  4. Graphics; and
  5. Logical approach.

The young and young at heart will appreciate entering “Webville” and entering the “Head First Lounge” right away and gazing at brightly colored drinks (elixirs). The authors use humor throughout in the:

  • Downloadable files as in using the acronym BYOWS (Bring your own web server);
  • Question and Answer Pages (There are no Dumb Questions);
  • Fill in the Blank Pages (You’re closer to learning HTML than you think); and
  • Crossword pages (It’s time to sit back and give your left brain something to do).

Humorously, the Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML reader is frequently greeted by photos of contemporaries with funny captions speaking to the reader (“Not only is this one fine cup of House Blend, but now we’ve got to tell all our customers about our coffees“). Cleverly, learners acquire standards compliant CSS, table, accessibility, and XHTML skills when working on the “Segway’n USA” exercise files, a very fun online trip around the US with a character named Tony. Standard book format with clear bulleted lists and real world code is provided, too. I will not say the reader will be having so much fun they will not even realize they are learning, they will be having fun because they will realize they are learning! This book competes well with other fun products like RobotC which teaches the new programmer to program a Lego NXT robot in C. You can find the book at O’Reilly Media.
